Date: 11 August 2013
Place: Esplanade Theatres on the Bay
Race: Adidas King of the Road 2013
The Yellow Fellows were revved up for this next race. Needless to say, it was one of the longer races in our race calendar and we have psyched ourselves up for the task ahead (sort of).
I was raring to go because I had missed the last race through illness and wanted to get back to the grind.
We were missing a couple of members as they were out of town and were running only 4 strong. Hermann, Joel, Sijie and myself met up at Marina Square together with last year’s champion Melvin and his beautiful wife Saffry. Now, just as we were about to leave to head to the race start, the skies had opened up and it started really pouring!
We then received smses from the organiser telling us that the race had been pushed back so we decided to wait in the car park to wait for it to subside.
Eventually at about 7am, the rain had subsided somewhat, and we decided to do a warm up run towards the starting pens but when we reached Esplanade, we saw lots of other runners still waiting in the shade and we were prevented from heading to the start line by the security guards. We joined the others under the shade and after a 15 min wait, we were told by the guards that the race had been cancelled.
Disappointed but really thankful to know that the organisers were being really careful with the Cat 1 thunder and lightning warnings, we made our way back to our cars.
One thing we did take away from this experience is that there is no compromise when it comes to safety and that there will always be another race to run. So kudos to the organisers for making that decision.
The Yellow Fellows, we will be back on the roads once again at the Singapore Bay Run 2013. So you can be sure we’ll see you there! We’ll be sporting a “new look” so watch for it!
At this point, we would like to take this opportunity to thank all the people who have made donations, supported us, liked us on facebook, and sponsored us in one way or other. Adidas, Oakley, Quirky Designs, and Belif Singapore, thank you so much for believing in us and seeing us through all our races and helping us to raise funds and awareness for the Singapore Cancer Society.
See you all at our next race and in the meantime, stay healthy and keep running!
