Date: 25 May 2013
Place: Sentosa Broadwalk
Race: NS Real Run 2013
Once again, coming to you, both legs blazing, the Yellow Fellow are at it again.
This time, it was for the NS Real Run 2013. We were one down cos Hermann was out with the flu, but Mong was back again to run with us. I don’t know about the rest, but I was a bit apprehensive about this race. I had played in a Charity Curtain Raiser game 2 days earlier and the legs still had not fully recovered. Plus, this was a race that I had never run before. Road, trail, sand. Man! What a combination!
Nevertheless, I was still there, bright and early at the Vivocity carpark to meet the rest of the fellows at 6.15am. Bumped into Michael, an old secondary schoolmate who was also doing the run (on his own apparently. He had a very interesting story to tell about the reason he was running this race, for the 5th year no less, but that is a story for another day).
We took a slow walk to the starting line, busying ourselves by talking about the route, about how we were prepared to walk most of it (because of soreness and injuries) etc etc. This is where I fast forward 1 hour to the start of the race, skipping the hoo-haa in between and the boring mc.
Race started with a kind of subdued atmosphere. For me, it was because I was a unfamiliar with the route and was a bit weary of my bum knees. I took it slow while I let the others run their own race. Sijie and Khim took off first, Joel was the next to break away and I was with Mong until about the 3km mark when my legs started waking up and got me going.
I have to say one thing though, I loved the route. There were 2 beach segments, and slopes galore! I am proud to say that I made it without stopping, save for the quick toilet break I needed to make at about the 5km mark.
It was great to see a couple of friendly familiar faces along the way. Met Ivan along the way and he helped advise me on changing my running style to help with the pain in my knees, and boy did it help. Sometimes, we all need some help at some time, right?
Before I knew it, I had completed the 2nd beach segment and was about 1.5km away from the finish line. Bumped into Angela who was pushing her way back to the end and ran with her a bit. The last 200m was a sprint to the finish for me. It was then did I realise that I had quite a bit left in the tank. Didn’t quite push myself to my fullest potential but hey, better safe than sorry right? I finished strong and so did the rest of the Yellow Fellows. Sijie, Joel, Khim, Myself and Mong.
And so, the Yellow Fellows finish their 3rd race.
