In Memory Of…. Mama Missy

I’ve gone a bit quiet not because of my usual excuse of being lazy, but I recently lost someone really dear to me.

I have to admit, no matter how ready you think you are, you can never be fully prepared for when the news arrives that you have lost that special someone.  In this case, it was my dearest mama (grandma) Missy.

My mama left us just about a month short of her 86th birthday.  I will always remember her as the little strong woman behind the family.  She was always very particular about cleanliness, everything about her and around her had to be proper, things had to be organized and prepared well in advance.  I guess I got some of her traits which was probably passed down from generation to generation.

I also have her (and my mum) to thank for my cooking abilities.  I learnt a lot from her and I am truly glad that she did manage to try one of our family’s specialty and passed it.

She always tries to catch me when I am on TV, even though she doesn’t really understand much English, she would make that effort and for that, I am truly thankful.  It was little things like that that made me feel that she was somehow proud of me really wanted to see what I was up to with my life.  At the wake, a relative even told me that she would remind them to watch me on tv whenever I was up.

She lived a full long life to see her 5 children grow up to be fine people, she saw them marry their spouses, have children of their own, see her children’s children grow up, get married and have children of their own.  In total, she lived to see her 5 children, 7 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

As I recall all the times that I spent with her and all the times that I didn’t get to spend with her, I cannot help but smile knowing that she is reunited once again with my Ah Kong, who recently, according to her, had been visiting her on a trishaw in her dreams and trying to get her to hop on.  I guess on that Saturday, she decided to go on that ride.

Mama, I know that even though you are on the trishaw ride with Ah Kong, you both will be up there looking out for us.  I will miss you a lot and I look forward to the time we can see each other again and share a plate of “Oh-Luak”, fish n chips and of course sotong goreng chilli.  I love you Mama.

  1. This is a very touching post… especially this paragraph:

My condolences to you and your family, Randall.
