Neverending Supply of Air

Finally, I got to enjoy my anniversary prezzie from Mel.

Tickets to watch Air Supply in concert.

Yes, I can feel the eyes rolling and the shaking of heads and I can even hear the raising of the eyebrows.  But, I am not ashamed to say that I love their songs.  Every one of us at some point of our lives listened to and loved their music.  Come on! Admit it.

Anyways, I mentioned it once when I saw the ad on tv and my wife, remembered it and bought the tickets for me as a present.  How sweet is that?  Altogether now… AWWWW.

I was actually wondering how many people would go for the concert cos they had come to Singapore almost every year for the last couple of years.  Was I in for a surprise.  When we got there, the number of people flocking to the venue was quite unbelievable.  It was a full house!

Now, the concert itself was actually very fun.  Everyone at the concert was singing along to each and every song.  The acoustics weren’t anything to shout about, but once Graham Russell and Russell Hitchcock started singing, nothing else mattered.  Russell’s voice still sounds the same and Graham’s showmanship really is quite awesome!

One of the songs however prompted me to do a search once I got home and it was “The Power of Love”.  I asked Mel who sang it first cos I could only remember it very clearly being a Celine Dion song.

After my search, I realized that it was a Jennifer Rush song which she recorded in 1985.  It spent 5 weeks on the UK Singles chart but could only scrape it’s way to number 57 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.  Air Supply recorded the song on their 1985 album and their version peaked at number 68 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and peaked at number 13 on the Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks making it an AC only hit.  Laura Branigan recorded her version in 1987 and Celine Dion recorded hers in 1993 and topped the Canadian and US charts.  Her version also earned her a nomination in the 1995 grammy awards.

Which would explain why we remember it as such.

Well, they did the usual “all leave the stage and wait for the crowd to yell for more before coming back to do an encore” stunt.  But when did they did, they didn’t disappoint.  They ended the night with All Out of Love and had the crowd singing along with them.  Nice.

I had a great time and truly enjoyed myself.  Thank you baby once again for the tickets.  I loved it!  Best part of it is the fact that I attended it with you.
